I may be in the position soon to add another car to my fleet, and I’ve been thinking of doing a fly-and-drive. I currently have an ample amount of vacation time at hand, so my rough plan is to buy something from the southwest part of the country, where rust is only a wild rumor, and spend 3-4 days roadtripping back to Michigan.
But this brings up a lot of potential problems. Aside from the issues of buying a car sight unseen and then trusting it to carry you back across the country, I’m also concerned about the legal aspect. I know my state’s laws on driving a newly-purchased vehicle, but I’d be traversing probably half a dozen states to get back home on this trip.
Has anyone here done something like this before? Any advice to share?

It should only take 3-4 days if you have major problems. I recently did Phoenix to NH in 2.5 days.

I would be taking my time and seeing the sights along the way, since I haven’t been to that part of the country before. But on the other hand, with a non-plated and non-registered vehicle, it might be more prudent to get back quickly...
